报告摘要 (Summary)

The presentation will start off with very basic information on the infection process of pathogens attacking plants, illustrated by a short clip adapted from the movie "Aliens". Then some recent research will be presented on the intimate warfare between pathogens and plants with a class of chemicals called effectors. In the second part of this presentation, a new type of disease control will be presented dealing with a new class of chemicals called defense activators that help plants protect themselves against stresses both biotic (such as insects and disease) and biotic (such as drought and heat). These chemicals or micro-organisms that produce such chemicals can be applied to leaves and this can increase the resistance of plant against a variety of stresses. This presentation will cover in very simple terms (with cartoons) the mechanisms by which plants can become activated for greater resistance particularly against fungal plant diseases. This presentation will be given mostly in English with some spoken Chinese and is suitable for undergraduates as well as post-graduates. 报告人简介:Dr. Tom Hsiang (向培健)

A Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, specializing in plant diseases. Before arriving in Guelph, he worked on fungal diseases of flowers and trees in Washington State, U.S.A, where he obtained his Ph.D. (University of Washington) and conducted post-doctoral studies (Washington State University). He is originally from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Forest Biology/Pathology at the University of British Columbia.  His current teaching and research involve fungal diseases of trees and grasses, particularly biology of fungal pathogens and disease management, as well as fungal genome sequencing & assembly.
